Emergency Power Generation - What Is a Transfer Switch and Why Is It Important?

When the power goes out in your home or business, not having electricity is an instant inconvenience. But when the outage is prolonged, what was initially a molehill can become a mountain. In such situations, the only solution is a preventative one: having an emergency generator to supply your building's power while the utility company fixes the problem. Emergency generators range from small-scale domestic models to industrial models that are anchored in place. But in either case, the key to accessing generators' power is a transfer switch, which is defined as "a device that switches electrical circuits between main power, and a local, backup generator which is kept on premises."

Industrial Power Tools

In domestic settings, transfer switches are usually operated manually, requiring the homeowner to shift from grid power over to generator power and back again. But industrial and commercial outfits are usually fitted with automatic transfer switches, which monitor incoming power and switch to generator power when the former is no longer supplied. In some cases, multi building outfits have more than one switch to access more than one generator.

How Does the Transfer Switch Process Occur?

Transfer switches are connected to both a building's main power source and its back up generator(s). Automatic switches contain circuitry that facilitates computer monitoring of incoming power. When the computer senses the signs of a brown out, power surge, or other issue that threatens power supply, it trips the switch and starts the generator. Then it accesses the generator's power supply when the frequency is right. In the case of manual switches, the switching back and forth is done by hand, which can save energy by preventing switch-overs during false alarms.

Automatic transfer switches come four varieties, with "break before make" and make before break being the most common. "Break before make" is the safer of the two, cutting the connection to one power source before switching to another. Despite the safety of break before make switches, switches that facilitate make before break can be of necessity. In the make before break arrangement, a facility is connected to both utility and generator power sources for a short period of time. Make before break switches are used when interrupted power supply is critical, such as in hospitals, laboratories, and critical defense outfits.

Emergency generators are often viewed as a luxury, but they soon become a necessity during a power outage. If your business' critical functions require constant electricity, opting for a backup generator is key to conducting business as usual while the power company does its job. If you already have a backup generator and need information on transfer switches or generator maintenance, contacting an emergency power equipment supply company is the best option.
