How Does the Transfer Switch Process Occur?
Transfer switches are connected to both a building's main power source and its back up generator(s). Automatic switches contain circuitry that facilitates computer monitoring of incoming power. When the computer senses the signs of a brown out, power surge, or other issue that threatens power supply, it trips the switch and starts the generator. Then it accesses the generator's power supply when the frequency is right. In the case of manual switches, the switching back and forth is done by hand, which can save energy by preventing switch-overs during false alarms.
Automatic transfer switches come four varieties, with "break before make" and make before break being the most common. "Break before make" is the safer of the two, cutting the connection to one power source before switching to another. Despite the safety of break before make switches, switches that facilitate make before break can be of necessity. In the make before break arrangement, a facility is connected to both utility and generator power sources for a short period of time. Make before break switches are used when interrupted power supply is critical, such as in hospitals, laboratories, and critical defense outfits.
Emergency generators are often viewed as a luxury, but they soon become a necessity during a power outage.
